"PRIDE" artist statement The letters in this artwork represent genetic code from human DNA. Each set of three characters (ATT, GCG, AGT, etc.) correspond to one amino acid, or base pair of DNA. "PRIDE" begins copying DNA base pairs at the beginning of Chromosome one, and continues in sequence from piece to piece through the entire work. This information is part of what makes us human, and it differs very little from person to person. This information is you, and me. Embedded visually within each panel is a symbol of the GLBT community – representing history, or culture, or personal identity. Each is a symbol of self-respect and distinction – a symbol of pride. "PRIDE" is my way of tribute. To the complexity of life, and similarly to its beautiful simplicity. And to the community of people who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, or transgender – our history, and our way of life. Transgender: A blend of the signs for Mars and Venus is a common symbol of pride within the transgender community. Transgender identity describes many overlapping categories including transsexual, cross-dresser, transvestite, androgynes, genderqueer, people who live cross-gender, drag kings, and drag queens. |
